7th Global Conference on Human Development 

What:  On 17-21 November 2008, the Institute of Cultural Affairs International, along with global partners including UNDP Poverty Practice and CIVICUS, will host the 7th quadrennial Global Conference on Human Development to be held in Takayama, Japan .

Disability, Disadvantage and Development in the Pacific & Asia 

What:  Held at Visions Theatre, the National Museum of Australia, Canberra from
September 29-30, 2008 this conference aims to be an in-depth, multidisciplinary exploration of the inter-relationship between disability, disadvantage and
development - a relationship that until recently has not been well recognized in development research, policy or practice. The conference will provide first hand information on the situation of people with disabilities in the Pacific and Asia region including their access to services, their ability to access information and their opportunities for development. It will review the work of the global, regional and local organizations working with people with disabilities and the strategies and actions needed to ensure equal access to social and economic development of all. The conference will bring together people with disabilities, disability practitioners, development workers, representatives of disabled people’s organizations, policy makers, aid donors, academics and government

People-based Organisations: what organisational psychology can contribute to aid and development 

What:  This workshop is run by Massey University's Centre for Psychology. The Workshop will explore a selection of relatively robust process skills/techniques for tackling ‘How’ we describe, select, train and evaluate those who work in the development field. The workshop is designed for managers and team leaders from organisations working in areas like community development, poverty alleviation and human services. The workshop is also suitable for I/O and HR practitioners who are consulting in these areas, or who wish to do so in the future; and for postgraduate students who would like build their human factors knowledge in a socially responsive field of practice. Community-based Integrated Watershed Management 

What:  This International Institute of Rural Reconstruction course offers a new approach in integrating technologies and participatory strategies within the natural landscape or "watershed" for sustainable resource use, conservation and protection. The course is designed for planners and field staff working with government and non-government organizations in the areas of food security,sustainable agriculture,water resources and natural ,resources management in rural areas. The course aims to share concepts and strategies for planning,implementing,monitoring and evaluating natural resource management projects in partnership with local communities using the watershed as a unit of analysis, planning and action. Human Rights Fieldwork - Principles, Strategies and Skills 

What:  The annual IHRN training programme "Human Rights Fieldwork - Principles, Strategies and Skills" explores the principles underpinning effective human rights fieldwork, enhance the skills of participants needed to carry this out safely before/during/after armed conflict, ensure that human rights fieldwork is relevant, effective, sustainable, participatory and accountable, raise participants' self-awareness of skills required to undertake international human rights fieldwork. The training programme is intended for development and humanitarian aid workers, civilian/military peace-keepers, NGO and IGO field staff and will explore:
- The evolution of international human rights law & mechanisms relevant to human rights fieldwork
- The full cycle of human rights monitoring from information gathering to stimulating sustainable change in conflict/post-conflict environments
- Case studies for monitoring the full spectrum of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights
- Interviewing and reporting techniques
- Applying development programming techniques to human rights fieldwork
- Working with field partners, co-operating and building relationships
- Personal preparedness including, safety/security, stress/trauma etc
- Simulation of core field challenges, such as inter-cultural sensitivities, teamwork, leadership etc.

Justice Sector Reform: Applying Human Rights Based Approaches 

What:  The aim of this IHRN training programme is to enhance skills of participants in applying Human Rights Based Approaches to Justice Sector Reform. It will facilitate the development of knowledge and skills regarding:
- legal principles, policies and practice underpinning human rights based approaches to justice sector reform
- inter-linkages between sector actors (law enforcement, judicial, corrections, etc)
- relationship between the justice sector and related terms such as 'security sector', 'rule of law', 'good governance'
- Human Rights Based needs assessment, programme design, implementation, as well as mentoring, monitoring & evaluation
- Programming tools and checklists (including Human Rights Based benchmarks and indicators of change)
- Case studies from national contexts as well as international field missions (including conflict and post-conflict)
The programme will use a variety of facilitation techniques including presentations by guest specialists, small group work and role-plays, case studies, etc, and is aimed at justice sector professionals in developing and industrialised countries, as well as international field missions: state, non-state and international civil servants (UN agencies, EC, etc); as well as policy advisors, project managers and consultants. Participation in Local Governance 

What:  This IIRR two-week special study program will provide the participants with an opportunity to observe development field experiences and enter into a learning discourse with seasoned development managers and practitioners from the Government Organizations (GOs), Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and other relevant entities in the field of democratic local governance intertwined with civil society participation. It will focus on the examination of the accomplishments, challenges and lessons in the experiences of participatory governance in the Philippines in the context of decentralization and civil society participation. Participatory Action Research for Rural Development

Second Intensive Course on Health, Development and Human Rights 

What:  This Course will be Directed by Professor Daniel Tarantola, Professor of Health and Human Rights at the University of New South Wales. The course seks to; 1) Define underlying principles and prominent approaches applied to each of the fields of health, development and human rights; 2) Describe the reciprocal interaction between health, development and human rights and how these linkages can be analysed and applied in practice in one or more selected areas pertinent to participants interests; 3) Illustrate how international mechanisms and procedures can be applied to health, development and human rights and how they can be accessed; 4) Identify key actions and research that is needed to further the synergy between health, development and human rights. Scholarships and Grants 

NZAID Postgraduate Field Research Awards 

What:  NZAID is pleased to confirm that about eight awards will be available in 2008/2009 to assist Masters or Doctoral students meet a proportion of the travel expenses and related costs involved in carrying out field research in developing countries.

The awards are only available to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents that are undertaking research as part of the requirements of a New Zealand-based Masters Degree or Doctorate in a field related to international development. Normally the planned duration of field research should be at least four weeks and it should be undertaken some time within the period December 2008 to November 2009.

Each award will be for a maximum of $5,000 for Doctoral students and $3,500 for Masters students.

This is a contestable fund with successful applicants being selected by a panel of assessors.
