Earthquakes: Haiti vs Christchurch

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Christchurch in September 2010 has drawn some comparison with the earthquake that struck Haiti in January. Both events are of a similar magnitude (Christchurch being .1 larger which is quite a bit), and both affected heavily populated areas. The huge difference of course is some 200,000 odd lives - the tragic cost of the Haiti quake.
A lot of discussion could be had around the differences between Port au Prince and Christchurch - especially regarding poverty - and it is clear that the enforcement of building codes played a major part in saving lives in Christchurch, however, one thing that is perhaps intriguing is the time of day the Christchurch quake struck and how this is being discussed as one of the main reasons people were not killed.
Often when an earthquake strikes in the night, especially in developing countries, it is seen as a misfortune and costing lives as people are unable to escape their dwellings. The Christchurch earthquake happening at night was seen as a positive as people were not in the CBD (its surprising how discussion around disaster events so often includes "we were lucky...").
Now it is clear that dwellings in Christchurch and Port au Prince are of quite a different nature, however, if the magnitude of the Christchurch quake was a percentage point higher or so (enough to make Christchurch buildings collapse) who's to say we wouldn't have seen a similar toll to Haiti. If this was the case then isn't saying 'its great it happened at night' giving people a false sense of security that the safest place to be is in bed? ... and does this discussion also indicate building codes in the Christchurch CBD are less stringent than in the suburbs? I'm sure there will be enough dissection of the Christchurch earthquake to answer some of these questions...
