DevNet Conference 2002 - Contesting Development: Pathways to Better Practice

The Institute of Development Studies at Massey University hosted the 3rd Biennial conference of the Aotearoa New Zealand International Development Studies Network (DevNet), from 5-7 December 2002.

This event was attended by 267 people and 92 papers were offered, as well as keynote addresses and panel discussions.  The main themes addressed were: development research and education; Maori development; North-South relations; trade issues; governance and participation; AIDS, health and gender; appropriate technologies; post-conflict development; conflict and peace; refugees and resettlement; relationships/partnerships; sustainable development; sustainable livelihoods; development projects; qualitative perspectives on development; tourism and development; microcredit/aid; poverty policy; indigenous development; cities and development; gender and development; rural development and food; and economic perspectives on aid and poverty.

In addition, there were three panel sessions (Trade and Development; Governance and Development; Human Rights) organised by NZAID to encourage feedback on NZAID strategies and policies; a special meeting on Internship Courses in Development Studies (organised by Julie Park, Auckland University) was held one lunch time; the DevNet Steering Committee met one evening; and we had the launch of the "State of the World's Population" report, attended by Minister for the Environment, Marian Hobbs and UNFPA spokesperson Stacey Daniels. A Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop organised by Tony Banks (Massey University) and facilitated by Mike Crooke (Transformation Systems, Australia), was run prior to the conference.

All keynote speakers apart from Mason Durie were generously funded by NZAID.
